Passports that have expired will not be extended. Generally, you should receive a new passport within 10 working days of application. If you need to travel at short notice or you require a passport in an emergency, you can apply for a temporary passport. A temporary passport is valid for the forthcoming journey only, or for a maximum of 12 months, and is only issued in urgent and justified circumstances.

You can obtain a temporary passport at the appropriate cantonal passport office or at a Swiss diplomatic mission abroad.
