Witness protection

Witness protection unit

The Federal Council adopted the dispatch on approving and implementing the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings and the new Federal Act on Extra-procedural Witness Protection in 2010. Following this, the witness protection bill was passed by the United Federal Assembly on 23 December 2011. This brings Swiss legislation into line with the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, which the Federal Council signed in 2008.

The Witness Protection Act took effect on 1 January 2013. It provides the statutory basis for establishing programs to protect people in federal and cantonal criminal proceedings. To this end, a new national witness protection unit has been established at fedpol to perform the task of ensuring protection to people outside of the actual proceedings and after conclusion of a trial.
