Europol, whose headquarters are in The Hague in the Netherlands, is the European law enforcement agency tasked with preventing and combating international organised crime. “Europol” is a portmanteau of European Police Office. The agency became operative on 1July 1999, and currently has a staff of about 600, some 100 of whom are liaison officers from more than thirty states.

A co-operation agreement between Switzerland and Europol took effect on 1 March 2006. The agreement allows for the exchange of strategic, operative and other specific information. To further co-operation, two Swiss liaison officers have been posted to The Hague. The scope of co-operation was extended on 1 January 2008 and now embraces 25 areas of crime.
