Europol

Europol, whose headquarters are in The Hague in the Netherlands, is the European law enforcement agency tasked with preventing and combating international organised crime. “Europol” is a portmanteau of European Police Office. The agency became operative on 1July 1999, and currently has a staff of about 1‘200, some 220 of whom are liaison officers from more than 40 states.

A co-operation agreement between Switzerland and Europol took effect on 1 March 2006. The agreement allows for the exchange of strategic, operative and other specific information. To further co-operation, 3 Swiss liaison officers and one liaison officer of the Federal Customs Administration (FCA) have been posted to The Hague. 2018 the scope of cooperation was updated and now embraces 30 areas of crime.
