Metrological traceability

Our role within the global metrology network
As Switzerland’s National Metrology Institute (NMI), METAS is responsible for the key task of implementing and publishing the International System of Units (SI) in Switzerland. We work closely with the International Bureau for Weights and Measures (BIPM) and are an active member of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) as well as a signatory of the Mutual Recognition Arrangement of national measurement standards and calibration certifications (CIPM MRA).

International cooperation and recognition
The collaboration between METAS, BIPM and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) underlines our involvement in a global network that supports the uniformity and quality of measurements worldwide. The mutual recognition arrangement between BIPM and ILAC represents international validation of our compliance with ISO 17025 and emphasises the importance of our services for industry, trade and commerce on the global stage.

Further information
For a more in-depth look at our metrological services and how we incorporate international standards and agreements, we recommend consulting the ILAC guidelines ILAC P10:01/2013 (PDF, 330 kB, 10.07.2024), which addresses the metrological traceability of measurement results.

Our commitment to the highest quality standards and international recognition enables us to advance and safeguard metrological expertise in Switzerland on a continuous basis.
