Protection of government officials

Federal officials who are afforded protection include the federal councillors, the Federal Chancellor and other councillors, members of the federal parliament in the line of duty and other federal officials deemed to be especially at risk. If necessary, protection is also afforded to these officials while abroad.

The Federal Security Service is responsible for determining the appropriate security measures for federal councillors in Switzerland and while abroad. These measures are based on a continuous assessment of the risk level and according to the personal wishes of the councillors. In Switzerland the measures are implemented by the cantonal police authorities. Measures for councillors while travelling abroad are implemented by the local security forces of the respective country. If the country in question is deemed to be a high-risk country, the measures are coordinated by the Federal Security Service. Councillors travelling to high-risk countries may be accompanied by Swiss security officers.
