Biometric identity card vs. e-ID
These are two separate and independent products, although they are sometimes confused. The biometric identity card is a physical document. It can be used for everyday identification and also allows travel within the Schengen area. The e-ID is a free digital supplement to the physical identity card. It is a digital identity that allows people to prove their identity online. It will be available on a mobile phone through the swiyu Wallet app. The e-ID is not a travel document.
The biometric identity card was introduced on 2 November 2026 and is optional.
Like the biometric passport, the biometric identity card contains a chip with your personal data, a photo and two digital fingerprints. The digitally signed data stored on the chip provides additional security against forgery and identity theft. Biometric identity cards also ensure that Swiss citizens can continue to travel freely within the EU in the long term.
Citizens may choose between the two types of identity cards according to their needs. For those travelling within the EU who wish to have a modern identity document that can be read and verified electronically, a biometric identity card is recommended. For those who only need to prove their identity in Switzerland by presenting themselves in person and showing their identity document, a non-biometric identity card is sufficient.
It is also possible to apply for a biometric identity card and passport together, as a combined offer.
