Main Division Federal Security Service
The main division of the Federal Security Service (FSS) is headed by Michael Kläy and performs security duties.
Security of Persons In collaboration with the cantonal authorities the FSS is responsible for the protection of federal officials (i.e. members of government, members of parliament, civil servants) and people and buildings afforded protection under international law (i.e. heads of state and government, ministers and royalty). The FSS is further in charge of recruiting, training and deploying security personnel on board Swiss aircraft in international commercial aviation and at certain sensitive destinations abroad.
Building Security The FSS, together with the cantons, ensures the protection and safety of federal buildings and buildings afforded protection under international law. It is responsible for the structural, technical and organisational security strategy for federal civilian buildings, the private residences of federal councillors, the homes of federal officials deemed to be at risk and Swiss diplomatic missions (embassies and consulates) abroad.
Federal Alert Centre FSS security personnel operate the federal interrogation centre, are responsible for the security of the parliamentary buildings and control access thereto. The FSS also operates the Federal Alert Centre, which takes emergency calls relating to attacks, burglaries and fires as well as emergency calls from other alert systems
Special Task Force for Hostage-Taking and Blackmail The FSS is responsible for the Special Task Force for Hostage-Taking and Blackmail (SOGE), which serves the federal government in crisis situations involving blackmail and is usually activated during incidents involving the blackmailing of Swiss federal authorities or foreign states.
Threat Assessment The FSS gathers and processes information and compiles situation reports and risk assessments as a basis for its security measures.
