Protection of government officials
Government officials who are afforded protection include the federal councilors, the Federal Chancellor and other councilors, members of the federal parliament in the line of duty and other federal officials deemed to be especially at risk. If necessary, protection is also afforded to these groups of officials while abroad.
The Federal Security Service takes the appropriate security measures for federal councilors both in Switzerland and abroad based on a continuous assessment of the risk level and according to the personal wishes of the councilors. In Switzerland the measures are implemented by the cantonal police authorities. Measures for councilors while travelling abroad are implemented by the local security forces of the respective country. These measures are coordinated by the Federal Security Service if the country in question is deemed sensitive, and councilors travelling to sensitive countries may be accompanied by Swiss security agents.
