For centuries Switzerland has been the destination of countless immigrants. Many different reasons induce people to leave their country and immigrate to Switzerland. Some come here to work, some are fleeing from a war and others need protection from persecution. At the same time many Swiss nationals are also drawn abroad in search of new perspectives. Switzerland’s present prosperity is due not least to immigration and emigration, those important sources of economic and cultural exchanges.
Swiss migration policy comprises three pillars: the promotion of Switzerland’s prosperity, the provision of protection for the persecuted and the security of the native and immigrant population.
